In 2023, Jaouen Hadjam was benched by the Nantes manager after choosing to observe his Ramadan fast on matchdays as reported by IlmFeed.
When Nantes manager was asked back in 2023 about it. He said: “Jaouen? There is no controversy. Those who fast, I support them … on matchdays, you should not fast,” Antoine Kombouare told a news conference after their 3-0 home defeat.
“It is not a punishment. I set rules. It’s his choice, and I respect it.”
A few months later, he was sold to Swiss football club Young Boys.
Three years later in 2026 now, the Algerian international has signed for Brighton and is set to play in the Premier League.
This is a significant career upgrade from the French and Swiss leagues.
And the twist? Nantes football club have since been relegated to Ligue 2.
