Worldwide, people from various backgrounds are embracing Islam almost on a day basis, Alhumdulilah. But while most do so on an individual basis, there are a few who revert as a family.
A Chinese Christian family, who wished not to be named, living in Indonesia did just that, fittingly in the month of Ramadan. Muslim Council of Hong Kong got in touch with them and also the person who became a key means for their guidance, Ben Oii, who himself also reverted to Islam around 7 months back.
We asked the family of four, specifically the father, the following questions and he replied accordingly:
1) What did you believe and follow before Islam and why?
We were Christian Catholics. I was born in a Christian family so I followed my family’s way of life.
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said in Sahih Muslim 2658:
“No one is born except upon natural instinct (a Muslim), then his parents turn him into a Jew or Christian or Magian.”
At the age of 19, a Hong Kong born Hindu woman from an Islamophobic family became a Muslim
2) What made you all believe Islam is the truth and accept it?
My wife is Indonesian and was born into a Muslim family. Due to marriage in Malaysia and for paper registration we married as a Christian couple because I didn’t know anything about Islam and she also didn’t think there was anything wrong.
After being married for many years, my wife is the one that introduced to me about Islam and the moment I tried to study further about Islam I found so many good things about Islam.

3) Do you think you will face any obstacles after becoming Muslims?
The only obstacle is that I’m not ready to let my surrounding friends to know first. I will let them know when I’m ready with some knowledge.
About my family, my dad passed away and my mum reside in Singapore and she is quite open minded.
I plan to let her know when the timing is right.

4) What’s your plans for the future as Muslims?
I will study more about the basics such as how to perform salah and learn to recite the Quran properly.
5) What’s your advice to those who believe Islam is the truth but they still don’t accept it?
Don’t judge Islam by your surrounding Muslim as they may not be practicing Islam. Do your own research and ask the right person if you have any questions.
Once you have the answers, you will surely believe this is the true path of God Almighty.
We ask Allah to keep this family steadfast upon the truth and increase them in knowledge and goodness.
