Allahu Akbar! It’s incredible to look back and see how much the American Muslim landscape has evolved over the last few decades – with countless efforts of generations of Muslims.
According to data compiled from the US Mosque Survey and the Association of Statisticians of American Religious Bodies (ASARB), the number of mosques in the United States has grown from just a handful in 1950 to an estimated 3,150+ today.

This should make us remember the saying of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in Musnad Ahmad 16957:
“This matter will certainly reach every place touched by the night and day. Allah will not leave a house or residence but that Allah will cause this religion to enter it…”
A few eye-opening milestones from the data:
1950s–1960s: Count remained very low, with only about 15 to 50 documented spaces nationwide as early post-pioneering communities established basic foundations.
1970s–1990s Boom: The total count jumped from roughly 100 in 1970 to 950 by 1990 due to immigration reforms enacted in 1965.
2000–2010 Cross-Over: The United States passed the 2,000-mosque threshold around 2010, fueled by steady community growth and conversion movements.
2010–2026 Modern Surge: Total numbers surged past 3,150 active centers, marked by a 31% increase in communities between 2010 and 2020 alone.
The Islamic Center of America above in Dearborn, Michigan, is America’s largest mosque. Built in 2005, the mosque is adorned with 10-story-high minarets. The main prayer area can hold 1,000 people.
The Diyanet Centre of America below has been described as the most beautiful Mosque in the United States. The Mosque, located in Maryland cost $100,000,000 to build and was funded by the Turkish government.
Key Drivers of Growth
Suburbanization: Moving away from crowded urban cores into purpose-built suburban complexes with larger community and educational facilities.
Immigration: Continuous arrivals from South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and parts of Europe.
Converts: Ongoing integration of diverse local populations embracing Islam.
