Earlier September, premium supermarket giant of Hong Kong, Wellcome Supermarket, decided to put halal labels on certain food and drink items around their stores in Hong Kong.

The move came as a nice surprise to many Muslims in Hong Kong, since this is the first time such a project has unfolded in Hong Kong.

Consequently, Muslim Council of Hong Kong contacted the supermarket to do further investigation in order to find out the reason behind this move and if there’s more than what meets the eyes.

Here is what was asked from the supermarket:

MCHK email to Wellcome Supermarket

Ten days later, the mega supermarket chain replied:

Wellcome reply

So, what can be concluded from this is that Wellcome Supermarket decided to put clearer halal labels on items which they receive as being halal certified.

We encourage Muslims in Hong Kong to send an email of appreciation to Wellcome (wdservice@dairy-farm.com.hk) for undertaking such a move, and through this we can motivate the supermarket chain to include more halal items for the 300,000 Muslims in Hong Kong to savour from.
