Are we really asking Allāh Azzawajal the way He ought to be asked or are we making any mistakes? Here is a quick checklist.
1) Be firm
Allah’s Messenger (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said:
“When anyone of you appeals to Allah for something, he should ask with determination and should not say, ‘O Allah, if You wish, give me,’ for nobody can force Allah to do something against His Will anyway.”
[Sahih Bukhari]
Suppose you had bought a lovely doll house for your daughter, or a great gift for your son and you asked him or her whether they would like to receive the surprises you had ready for them. How would you feel if their responses were, “Well, you can give it to me if you want to”?
2) Be passionate
Ask Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) passionately, from the bottom of your heart, for the good things that you want. Don’t just recite Duas, beg from Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) through your Duas.
3) Be regular
Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:
“Whoever does not ask of Allah, He becomes angry with him.”
[Saheeh Sunan Al-Tirmidhi, 2686]
People get irritated when you keep making requests from them. But Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) dislikes it when people don’t make requests from Him and they don’t ask Him for anything. To not ask Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) for good things is to be ungrateful towards Him. He wants to give us, so we shouldn’t have the attitude of not caring to receive what Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) wants to give.
4) Be patient
Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) will give according to His Will, when and what He knows to be best for you. If your wishes are not granted in this life then you will be given your wishes in the form of good deeds on the Day of Judgement. So you always win by asking from Allah (subhana wa ta’ala).
